If you are here from Shannon Fabrics My Cuddle Corner – Welcome!  So happy to have you here!  As promised, here is the tutorial for the Pluto inspired travel pillow!

Pluto travel pillow title image

Here is what you will need:

  • Yellow and green Cuddle – 9″ strips or 1/4″ yard
  • Black Cuddle – 1/4″ yard or large scrap
  • Matching thread
  • Pins or clips
  • Polyfil Stuffing – I use Fairfield
  • 90 sharp needle – I use Schmetz
  • Pattern pieces for ears – Download cuddle travel pillow – pluto ear pattern

pluto materials

Step 1:  Gather materials listed above as well as print out the pattern for the ears.

Step 2:  Cut pieces

  • 2 – 9″ x 15″ pieces of the yellow Cuddle
  • 2 – 2″ x 15″ pieces of the green Cuddle
  • 4 – ear pieces from black Cuddle

Step 3:  Pin the green 2″ x 15″ strips to each of the yellow pillow pieces

Sew down each long edge of the green Cuddle to secure.

At this point you can sew a tag onto one of the pillow pieces if desired.

Step 4:  Pin the ear pieces, right sides together.  Use a lot of pins since the Cuddle can be slippery.

Sew around the ear with a 1/4″ seam allowance, leaving the top edge open for turning.  Check your seam before turning to make sure you didn’t miss – like I did!

If this happens, no worries, just re-sew the seam!  Turn the ear right side out.  Repeat with other ear piece.

Step 5:  Pin the ears 2″ from the short edge of the pillow piece.  Line up the bottom of the ears with the bottom of the pillow piece.

Baste the top of the ears onto the pillow piece.

Step 6:  Pin up the ears to make sure they don’t get caught in the seam when finishing the pillow.

Place the other pillow piece right sides together with the pillow piece with ears.  Make sure to match up the green stripe.  Pin or clip well.

Sew around with a 1/2″ seam allowance, leaving a 2-3″ hole at the bottom for turning.

Step 7:  Clip the corners and turn the pillow right side out.  Stuff to desired firmness and close hole with a ladder stitch.
